To improve sun safety for kids’ eyes, you should invest in kid’s sunglasses. When choosing sunglasses for your child, look for something that offers enough protection. Invest in sunglasses that wrap around and block close to 100% of the UVB and UVA rays. 

The dark tint does not indicate the percentage of harmful rays that the sunglasses can block. The tint can only block the non-toxic visible light. Therefore, instead of going for the darkest sunglasses, check the sunglasses’ Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). 

5. Apply Sunscreen 

Sunscreen is not just for when you are hanging out at the beach – every time your kid goes outside, you should ensure that his/her skin is protected with sunscreen. At home, apply sunscreen featuring a Sun Protection Factor of at least 15. When at the beach, the ideal sunscreen should have an SPF of at least 30. 

To ensure sun safety for children, apply the sunscreen generously for approximately 30 minutes before your kids head out. You should reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. However, if your kid is swimming or he/she is sweating a lot, you can reduce the reapplication time to every hour. Keep in mind that for games involving water, you will need to use a waterproof sunscreen. 

6. Check Your Kid’s Medication 

If your children are taking some medicines, checking the meds can help with boosting sun safety for children. Some medicines – for example, acne meds and some antibiotics – make the skin more sensitive to the sun’s rays. If you cannot figure out whether the meds your kid is taking can increase UV ray sensitivity, consult a pharmacist. 

The best way to boost sun safety for kids taking meds that increase sensitivity to UV rays is to take extra sun precautions. For example, encourage your kid to stay indoors or cover up completely. 

7. Boost Your Kid’s UV Resistance Through Diet 

What you feed your kids can have an impact on how their skin handles the sun’s rays. Eating certain veggies and fruits can give the kids the raw materials their bodies need to build their UV protection. While this is not a substitute for the topical sunscreen and covering up, combining both the topical sunscreen and the nutritional support can boost the kid’s skin protection.
