Can I Ski In Spring?


When the spring season arrives, most people turn their attention to beach vacations. For die-hard skiers, this is generally not the case. Plenty of snow exists during the season, making spring skiing ideal.

If you are planning on donning your ski jacket and heading to the ski resorts this spring season, this article should come in handy. We will focus on making your time on your all-mountain skis easier.

Why You Should Consider Warm Weather Skiing

Stock Up on Sunscreen

During the spring season, the sun is usually out. This increases the risk of sunburn significantly. To ensure that you don’t end dealing with sunburns, you will need to invest in some sunscreen.

You will have to apply sunscreen correctly for it to be useful. You may need to reapply the sunscreen a couple of times during the day.

For better protection, consider investing in a sunscreen featuring an SPF 30 or higher. To ensure that lips stay hydrated, be sure to use lip sunscreen too.

Tip: Purchase a small bottle that can fit in your ski pants pockets. This will eliminate the need to keep walking to the car now and then.

Use Your Helmet and Goggles

Both the ski goggles and helmet are supposed to be your friend. Do not ignore them just because the temperatures are higher.

The sun reflecting from the snow is generally more intense in the spring season. For this reason, use goggles featuring the ability to protect you from the UV rays.

On top of protecting your head in the case of a fall, the helmet will help protect your scalp. When exploring the slopes during the winter season without a helmet, the sun could make your life uncomfortable.

Don’t Forget to Dress in Layers


When warm weather skiing, you will need to wear some lighter ski wear. If you use your thick, winter thermals, you will end up getting hot too quickly. When layering up, ensure that the clothing you are donning is not just light, ensure that is also breathable.

On a normal spring skiing day, the temperature will keep increasing. If it gets too hot, consider getting rid of the mid-layer. If your clothing features some armpit zippers, consider opening these – this should let some fresh mountain air to flow through.

Avoid getting caught without a backup. It is often chilly when the sun goes down and early in the morning. Being well prepared is the key to staying warm throughout the day.

Do Not Ignore Hydration

It will be hot outside, you will be at a high altitude, and you will be exercising. Be sure to stay hydrated before, during the session, and after. Drink as much water as you possibly can. You do not want to end up going through altitude sickness on a beautiful, sunny spring day.

Follow the Sun

The sun will melt and soften the snow during the day. At night, the temperatures will drop, meaning that the morning snow will be both hard and icy before it thaws. To avoid the icy snow, consider sleeping in, enjoy your breakfast, and then hit the ski tracks at around 10 am.

Follow the sun by skiing the tracks that are in the sun. Keep in mind that the snow conditions may not be constant. Therefore, be cautious about moving from the shade to the sun and vice-versa. The snow may be soft in the sun, however, the moment you ski into the shade of a tree, you may end up hitting a hard patch.

Understand That Special Safety Concerns Exist During the Spring

The conditions present during the spring season mean that more trees and rocks are exposed, compared to the winter season. For the ski areas that didn’t get hundreds of inches of snowfall during the winter season, the coverage usually dwindles quickly during the spring season.

For this reason, you should always be on the lookout for changing snow conditions and debris. If you happen to catch a rock or a tree root, it could throw you seriously.

Tune Your Skis

Before heading to the slopes, be sure to tune your skis. A good edge tune will come in handy for the early mornings when the snow surface is firm. However, keep in mind that the tune should have the ability to deal with the wet snow that usually comes later in the day.

Wax waterproofs a ski – this makes it much easier for the skis to glide along on small beads of water. For the wet snow, a warmer softer wax may be the best option.

You should consider improving the ski base structure too. The structure refers to the pattern of fine grooves that exist on the base material – these allow the water to escape in the form of tiny water droplets. If the water does not have the ability to escape in bead form from under the skis, the water will “sheet” and hence cause suction.

Getting a good tune with a stone grind should help improve the skis’ base structure. Work with a professional. Ask the professional to give the skis an all-season structure pattern.

  • Killington, Vermont – If you feel the need for speed when on the east coast, you can rip up some groomers in Killington.
  • Mammoth Mountain, California – Even when almost every other ski resort has already closed in California, you should be able to enjoy warm weather skiing in this resort.
  • Squaw valley | Alpine Meadows, California – The California sun and bumps combined with over 400 feet of fun make this resort ideal for everyone.
  • Breckenridge – This ski resort should be ideal for you if you are looking for great snow conditions, warm sunshine, and various parties, festivals, and concerts.
  • Arapahoe basin – This resort is the first to open and also the last to close in Colorado – this is due to its higher elevation along the Continental Divide.

If you explore the slopes in Europe, you may want to consider the following ski resorts:

  • Zermatt, Switzerland – This resort features the longest ski season in the Alps. This is due to its north-facing slopes, glacier skiing, and high elevation.
  • Verbier, Switzerland – Despite featuring a southern orientation, this ski resort does feature great spring conditions.
  • Anton, Austria – Thanks to numerous northern-facing slopes, this ski resort is open from late November to late May. Being well-equipped with snowmaking, the ski resort allows exploring the southerly sunny slopes.
  • Val Thorens, France – This resort is confident about its snow cover. Its lift-accessed Peclet glacier allows summer skiing.

In Canada, you can explore the following slopes during the spring season:

  • Whistler Blackcomb – While Blackcomb mountain does shut down early in the spring season, Whistler Mountain does extend its spring ski season.
  • Banff Lake Louise – You should be able to ski during the spring season until May 5th.
