Helpful Advice On How To Lower And Increase PH Levels In Pools

Part of having a good swimming experience especially with kids is not just checking the kids swimming pool safety guide, but also ensuring that the water in your pool is at the right PH levels. This prevents rusting and staining on the metal fittings as well as the stains on the walls of the swimming pool.

The proper swimming pool PH should be between 7.4 and 7.8. Anything above and below this should warrant action on your part to bring the PH back to the right levels.

Increasing the PH level

When the pool ph low, there are some things that you can do to bring it back up such as

1. Check your reagents

If you test your swimming pool and realize that the pool ph low, the first thing you need to do is to check the reagents. You should get new ones each year and they should never be used between different text kits.

If you find that your kit is getting old, simply get a new one.

2. Using soda ash

Soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate is an effective agent in raising the water PH. The limit is 2lbs per 10,000 gallons of swimming pool water. Begin at the deep end and distribute all over the surface of the water.

As you do this, the pump should be running allowing the water and the soda ash to distribute. Give it an hour and test the PH again. It should have gone up but if it is still not at ideal levels, simply add more soda ash and wait for another hour before testing.

Do not worry if the pool appears cloudy. The water will regain clarity after a day or so.

3. Use baking soda

If you find that the pool ph low even after raising them, you will need to check the total alkalinity of the water.

Low water alkalinity causes the PH of the water to fluctuate. The right alkalinity levels should be between 80ppm and 150ppm. If it is indeed low, you can start by adding 1.4lbs of baking soda otherwise known as sodium bicarbonate to 10,000 gallons of pool water.

This amount is enough to raise the alkalinity of the water by 10ppm. As is with the test above, allow the pump to run and retest after an hour.

You should take care not to use too much baking soda as it might raise the alkalinity beyond the optimum levels. This will then prove much more difficult to lower.

4. Aerate the pool

Another highly effective method of raising the water PH is to aerate. The water should be pumped to the surface. Do whatever you need to do to ensure that the water is moving on the surface.

The function of aeration is to drive carbon dioxide out of the water. With aeration, you will be able to raise the PH levels in the pool while still maintaining the water alkalinity levels. The whole process should take a few days.

If you find that raising your PH has proven difficult with other methods, this method will help raise it. Always observe swimming pool etiquette tips when swimming.

How to lower PH levels in pools

In the case of pool ph high, everything else goes out of balance not to mention that the chlorine will be less effective.

For swimmers, they may experience irritations on the skin, scaling and the pool’s pipes and filters will clog up.

There are plenty of reasons why the PH of the water can rise beyond optimum levels. Shocking your pool with calcium hypochlorite, high alkalinity, and adding the wrong amounts of chemicals can all raise pool ph. This is also an excellent way on how to get rid of water bugs from your swimming pool.

There are plenty of effective ways to lower the pool’s PH.

1. Sodium bisulfate

Sodium bisulfate is also known as dry acid. It comes in powder form which means that it can be blown by the wind so the best time applies is a calm day.

The chemical is much milder than some other chemicals and is also safe to use. When adding sodium bisulfate, start by reading the recommendations by the manufacturer.

It is always s a good idea to start small than to add too much as this will create a problem of bringing the pool ph high.

2. Muriatic Acid

Muriatic acid should be used with caution. It is a powerful acid that can dissolve rock and is often used to clean home tiles that have an excessive buildup of calcium. It’s important to learn how to clean the tile at the swimming pool waterline.

Another name for muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid.

If you choose to use this chemical, then you should first ensure that your entire body is covered. Wear rubber gloves as well as face masks.

It is advisable to add muriatic acid during calm days as the wind can still blow it in your direction.

Similar to using sodium bisulfate, ensure that you read the manufacturers’ instructions before using muriatic acid.

There are two methods you can use to add muriatic acid. The first will require you to turn off the pump then pour the acid at the deep end of the pool. Since it is denser than water, it will sink to the bottom. Then turn the pump back on and allow the aid to circulate.

The second way is to pour the acids by the return jets. The pump can then circulate the chemical throughout the pool. Let the pump run for a few hours for the acid to fully mix with the water.

Test the PH after a few hours and if it is still high, you may need to add more muriatic acid. Whenever you are not using the swimming pool it’s important to understand the reasons why you should cover your swimming pool.
