Quick Hot Tub Ozonator Installation Guide

Ozone is one of the most important natural sanitizers which help in the overall safety of your hot tub. It does not require much attention, and some newer models even have a 5-year lifespan. Hot tub Ozonator installation is fairly easy as well, so you won’t have trouble maintaining your spa’s proper health.

There are only three steps in spa ozone generator installation, which means you can do it even if you’re not a professional. In this article, we will guide you through the process, showing you every little detail about the installation.

Hot Tub Ozonator Installation Step-by-Step Guide

Since there are only three steps in the installation, it means you can have your Ozonator ready in no time. You will have to mount it inside the cabinet, connect it to the injection manifold, and lastly connect it to power.

Mounting the Ozonator

To properly do the hot tub Ozonator installation, you should check the manual. Many installation manuals recommend installing it above the water level. However, this can be different depending on the brand and the hot tub type. The Ozonator is placed high on the wall and under the cabinet for most portable above-ground tubs. If you have an in-ground spa, place the Ozonator above water if you can do it easily, but you do not have to do it if it is not possible.

Attach the Ozonator firmly to the stud or wall using all screws. You can also use another plywood piece to strengthen the unit. This can also prevent drilling from the inside. You should locate the Ozonator is a place where you can easily see the status lights or where you can easily accomplish the replacement and maintenance.

Connecting the Injection Manifold and the Ozone Hose

If your spa is already ozone-ready it means it will have an ozone injector. Or, it may use an ozone jet to bring ozone into the spa. On the other hand, you may need to install the pipe or ozone injector which serves this purpose.

On the other hand, if your spa is not ozone-ready, there are three ways you can do the spa ozone generator installation:

  1. Plumbing and Ozone Injector into a Hose. You will need to find a ¾ inch diameter hose that is attached to a spa jet. Pick a jet which is by itself, or at the end of the line. Even better, choose one which is located near the bottom of the spa. Stop the water flow with a valve if possible. If not, drain the tub. Next, cut the hose with shears or a razor knife, and then push it over the ozone injector. The spot where the hose connects should be facing upwards. The arrows should also point at the water flow direction. On the other hand, if you don’t have any arrows, bear in mind that the end of the hose where air cannot be blown into is the exit port for the water.
  2. Attach the Ozone Hose and a Hot Tub Jet. Most tub jets are both Water and Air jets combined to get more force. If your tub has one hose as well as one airport on the jets, you should make two cuts on the hose. Make the first cut at the jet and another at the jet, plugging the manifold part. If you have more than one jet, remove one from the air loop, using plugs and adapters to connect the ozone hose.
  3. Use an Ozone Manifold. For this method, you will have to use a large manifold made from PVC to connect to the 1.5-inch or 2-inch plumbing. Make sure you have 24 inches of clear space where you can properly install the manifold. Glue it in a perfect location, and then connect the ozone hose.

Connecting the Ozonator to Power

Most spa ozonators come with an AMP plug or a J&J mini plug. This connects it to the circuit board, which in turn means it is operating only when the pump is running at low speed, instead of doing it 24 hours a day. In case you have AMP plugs, but your Ozonator comes with a J&J plug, you could use ozone adapter cords to connect it to the tub.

On the other hand, if your hot tub does not have a spa pack controller, or it has an old system with no ozone connection port, you can also hard-wire the wires directly to the spa pump clock. This will ensure it is operating only when the pump is working, especially if it is running at a low speed.
