Sliding down snowy slopes on the Airboard® Snow-bodyboard is one of the most exhilarating snow sports. You can descend at speeds of more than 80 mph and literally fly over snow bumps. The best thing about this unconventional winter sport is just how easy to learn it is. You only need a short lesson to grasp the basics and start riding.

Thanks to the low center of gravity and soft and flexible riding and landing surface, these snow-bodyboards are also one of the most enjoyable ways to slide down the mountains. Joe Steiner of Switzerland invented this snow sport as a gentler and safer way to rush down the slopes after he injured his leg while snowboarding. Due to the dangers associated with any winter sport, proper safety instructions must always be followed.

Airboard® is the perfect bodyboard for snow. Created, tested and designed in Switzerland, the highly innovative inflatable sport products company follows the quality that is up to the legendary Swiss quality standards. Composed of a stable chassis and made of reinforced materials, it can withstand the extreme cold, abrasive terrain and impacts and provide many fun-filled winters. The air chamber is designed to absorb shock from bumps and landings while also being tough enough to withstand rides on abrasive surfaces.

The fun and ease of riding are the reasons Airboard® snow body-boards are one of the fastest-growing winter activities. If you would like to experience the thrill of rushing down the mountains on an Airboard®, there are many Airboard® destinations from Alpine countries to snow sports resorts. Keep reading this review to learn more about this winter sport.

Fit: Be sure to choose the right Airboard® model for your height, weight and riding style. Here are the four models to choose from:

The Classic 130-X is the versatile model designed for sporty riders who want to sled down slopes super-fast while making exhilarating jumps. This model is fast, easy to steer, and has a sturdy build for stability at high speed. Its maximum height rating is up to 190cm.

If you’re an easy rider, the Freeride models are designed for freeriding on slopes and in the backcountry. They provide increased float in powder snow and extra absorption. They feature a lifted front-end that offers smooth rides and a wide shape for cruising and comfort. The 100-X is for shorter riders up to 160cm tall. If you’re taller than 190cm, the Freeride 180-X is the perfect fit.

The Classic 130-X ATA race board is the perfect model for racing and jumping down the mountain. Designed for the athletic rider, it is agile and turns easily. It is built sturdy for stability as you rush down the slopes at high speed.  It can support riders up to 190cm tall.

Ease of Use: One of the best things about Airboard® snow-bodyboarding is just how easy it is to master and how easy the Airboard® is to use. Unlike skiing and snowboarding, it doesn’t require long and expensive courses. Even if you’ve never sledded down the slopes this way before, all you need is a short lesson and a review of the  Airboard® safety guidelines and you will be ready to zoom down the slopes with confidence.

The Airboard® is lightweight, packs down really small when deflated, and fits into the bag it comes with. You can snowshoe up the slopes while carrying it on your back without it tiring you.

Thanks to the high-performance C7 valve and hand pump it comes with, inflating it is a breeze – just press the valve down and turn right and it will be ready for riding in two to three minutes.   Deflation is fast and easy as well. Just press the valve down and turn left.

The Ride: Riding and maneuvering the Airboard® down snowy slopes is easy and intuitive. A short lesson by a guide and some practice is all you need to have it down, even if you’ve never done it before. Whizzing down the slopes on an Airboard® is a total blast. If you love speed, you can rush down at more than 80 mph and find yourself literally flying.

To ride it while seated, you sit on the snow-bodyboard with your feet on the snow and use body movements to steer it. If you’ve a Freeride model and want to ride it down wide slopes in the backcountry, you plop down on the Airboard® on your stomach with your hips at the center of the back of the board and lift your upper body to give the board more stability and make it easier to control.

Three sets of runners on the bottom of the body make it easier to control the board, even when riding at high speed. When you want to make a turn, just lean your body in the direction you want to turn to and apply forearm pressure. To stop, you will need to turn hard enough to make a 90-degree turn. You can also dig your boots firmly into the snow to slow down then stop.

Comfort and Safety: The Airboard® offers comfortable rides. The surface you lie on is as soft, flexible and comfortable as an air cushion. The inflated snow sled is sturdy and offers the shock absorption and comfort needed when you ride over bumps or land large jumps reducing the impact on your body.

Since you ride on a soft and stable platform with a low center of gravity and have two heavy-duty handles to hold onto as you ride and a hand-leash to secure the board to your arm, Airboard® snow-bodyboarding can be a safe winter sport.

If you fly over snow bumps, you land on a cushion of air, not on a hard sled. Accident rates are low with proper instruction and following of the safety guide. Riders also need to don a helmet, knee pads and other snow safety gear and protective clothing.

Material and Durability: Airboard® is up to Swiss quality standards so you can rest assured it is robust and resilient enough to perform well in extremely low temperatures and last many seasons. It is made using reinforced plastic-coated textiles that can withstand constant friction, abrasion, and impacts.

The chassis is stable and the air chamber is designed to absorb the shock from impacts while resisting abrasion, puncturing and tearing. In the event of an accident, a repair kit is part of the package so you can patch it on the fly. The two handles for holding onto are heavy-duty and the profile runners are fully glued to ensure they don’t come off easily.

The C7 valve for inflation and deflation is made using the same materials used to make military rafting boats. It is anti-freeze and won’t fail you while on the mountain.

Pros

  • Created, tested and designed in Switzerland with Swiss quality and durability
  • Lightweight and comes with a carry bag
  • Easy to ride even for beginners
  • Sturdy grip handles
  • Stable, soft, flexible and comfortable riding surface

Cons

  • As an inflatable bodyboard for use on snow, the risk of puncturing is there (A repair patch is part of the package though.)
